Clark & Wilkins Industries, Inc. was started in 1870 by Mr. George M. Clark & Mr. Hartwell A. Wilkins. The company originally focused on the harvesting, packaging and sale of firewood. The business did very well in the beginning because most of the clientele was the aristocratic upper class of Manhattan so the business was deemed depression proof. This held true as the company survived the Great Depression intact. The method of operations was that the company owned land in upstate New York and brought the wood down to stockyards in Manhattan via barge. The firewood business began to slow down in the 1940s and 1950s as other cheaper methods of heating came into use. Clark & Wilkins decided it needed to expand its product lines to keep the company going strong. In the 1950's they added wood fencing to their product line. This was the first shift into making Clark & Wilkins what it is today.
In 1970, the company hired Mr. Jack Roth who served as president of the company until his passing on Feb 1, 2008. Mr. Roth had a background as a chain link fence contractor and began to bring other product lines into the company. The firewood business was eventually sold off as the fencing end of the business grew. Chain link fencing, structural steel and ornamental iron work were added in the 1970s. As the fencing industry in New York began to shrink, waterproofing and concrete were soon added to the product line. This was followed in recent years by painting, asphalt paving, interior renovation and general contracting. Clark & Wilkins began in 1870 as a firewood company and has become a full service contractor to all of your needs, whether they are commercial or residential.
